Descendents Rise of Red

My kids absolutely love the Descendents series. This one wasn't their favorite, but it got them to rewatch all the originals over and over again for about 2 weeks. I personally loved the fact that they brought in Brandy and Paolo Manralban from the 1997 Cinderella movie. I loved that Cinderella movie! So this new Descendents movie was about an ongoing fight between Cinderella and the Queen of Hearts which their daughters go back in time and try to fix. So our theme was a mix of those two princesses.

As an appetizer, I made a spinach artichoke dip placed in a carriage sourdough bread bowl to pay homage to Cinderella. I made this from scratch, which didn't take too long, and it was delicious! However, the girls didn't even try it. I was a little disappointed because they usually at least try everything we do in these theme dinners. Oh well, I will keep trying!
For the actual meal, we had our very own Royal Feast. I made a roast in the crockpot, along with some carrots, as I know the girls would eat that. Then made some mashed potatoes to go with it. I love to use the crockpot as I can put it in the morning, and it be ready by dinner. I did follow a new recipe this time and it had a little bit more prep than my normal way. Not sure if the extra time was worth all the prep work, but it was eaten all the same!

Our drink was where we brought in the Queen of the Hearts to our theme. Our drink was essentially a Cape Cod, which consisted of Cranberry juice and vodka. The girls had cranberry juice and sprite. The drink was simple, and I probably could have added a bit of grenadine to make it redder, but it was still a good drink!

After watching the movie, we should have made Bridget's cupcakes, which was part of the reason for fighting in the movie. They were pink and had feathers on them, along with some other cupcake decorations. Since we didn't watch nor read about that when doing some research on the movie, we made some heart shape whoopie pies. I still think they tied into the movie with the Queen of Hearts and all but Bridget's cupcakes would have been better suited to this particular movie. With that said, the heart shape whoopie pies turned out super good! Kyrie actually made everything with only some supervision from me. I only made the heart stencil for her to follow and advised on if they were baked long enough. She measured out all the ingredients, mixed them together and then filled the heart shape whoopie pies on the parchment paper. Once they cooled down, she made the filling and then sandwiched them together. Everyone enjoyed them so much, it has been a long time since we actually ate a whoopie pie!

Again, not a bad overall theme when you look at it as a whole. It got Kyrie to bake a treat from start to finish all by herself. Hopefully this gives her some confidence in the kitchen when she gets older. Hope you enjoyed reading along and tried making one of the items yourself!
